Sleep dysfunction is common in patients with chronic sinusitis, whether or not they also have obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). Â According to a recent medical report, sinus surgery confers substantial improvements in sleep quality(JAMA Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2015;141:873-881).
Patients with chronic sinusitis describe fatigue and poor sleep quality even if they have not been diagnosed with OSA. Â In the study, 70% of patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery reported significant improvement in sleep quality. Â According to the study authors, sleep quality in patients with chronic sinusitis is not simply related to nasal obstruction, but appears related to chronic inflammation.
Restful, restorative sleep is critical for daily function and overall health. Â Issues that affect the upper airway, including obstruction and chronic inflammation, should be diagnosed and treated.
